There are many types of futon mattresses, but most fall into one of two categories — folding over once or twice. Each has its own merits and specific uses.
Bi-Fold Futon Mattresses
Bi-fold mattresses fold once down the length, in the middle of the mattress. They are commonly used for a couch, folding parallel to the long side of the mattress. You will often see them used in metal-frame Futon Loungers. The majority of futon mattresses sold today are bi-fold mattresses. They cost a little more than the simplest tri-fold mattress, but the are much more comfortable in the long run and last longer without compacting.
Tri-fold mattresses
Tri-fold futon mattresses fold in two places and are commonly used for twin beds, futon chairs, and futon love seats. They fold parallel to the shorter side of the mattress. They either double up on the seat area with the final portion going up the back of the futon frame, or they have single sections for seat and back, with the final section overlapping the back of the futon frame. Our Tri-fold Futon Mattress will serve in either of these settings. They are typically made of cotton without additional foam.
Be aware that tri-fold mattresses are necessarily thinner than other mattresses to enable them to fold into thirds, so they will be 6-inch mattresses rather than 8-inch or 10-inch thicknesses.
