Do you prefer Cotton, Foam, Innerspring, or a combination?Sixth Consideration
Do you prefer cotton, foam, cotton/foam, or an innerspring in your futon mattress?

There are many kinds of futon mattresses from which to choose. Here is a quick summary of the various types to get you started. Click on the links for more information.

All-Cotton Futon Mattresses

The original term “futon” means “cotton mattress.” The traditional futon mattress was made of 100% cotton. All-cotton mattresses are still being made, and today’s versions are better than ever. The advances in cotton processing have given us the Aerolife™ Bonded Cotton in Wolf futons -- a unique process producing incredible loft and resilience with 30% less weight, making converting your futon easier than ever! Cotton and Foam Mattresses

Over time, 100% cotton futons tend to pack down and become extremely firm and heavy, so futon mattress manufacturers began to incorporate foam to the mix to eliminate this tendency. As a padding component, cotton enhances the feel of the bed when it is used with foam and other more lively materials (as in a mattress). This allows the mattress to conform to the body without the spongy or bouncy feel (of foam alone) that prevents body-conforming comfort. The foam layers add the feel of plushness without a great deal of additional weight. Then manufacturers added polyester to add more softness. Read about Cotton and Foam Mattresses!

Foam Futon Mattresses

When you talk about foam, the word “plush” comes into play. An all-foam mattress offers exceptional plushness (soft, cushiness) and support that tends to last longer than cotton only or cotton-and-foam combinations. Additionally, foam mattresses are lighter weight than all-cotton mattresses. Since, in converting your futon couch to a bed, you have to lift and maneuver your futon mattress much more than you would ever do for a platform-type bed, you need it to be lighter and more flexible. Innerspring Futon Mattresses

Internal springs provide firm support for all body types. Innerspring mattresses have steel circular coils inside that “push back” against the pressure applied to them to provide good cushioning system that will last far longer than another type of mattress. Most innerspring mattresses are surrounded (encased) by layers of cotton or foam or both. The additional cotton or foam layers protect the body from ever feeling the individual coils and provide additional softness. The coils provide firm support at just the right points on your body.
